Gürkan Sert graduated from Marmara University Faculty of Law in 1999. He completed his master’s (2003) and doctoral (2007) studies at Marmara University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Medical History and Ethics. In 2014, he was awarded the title of Associate Professor, and in 2022, he became a Professor.
Gürkan Sert currently serves as the Head of the Department of Medical History and Ethics at Marmara University Faculty of Medicine.
He has authored seven published books on topics such as "patient rights," "privacy in healthcare," "reproductive rights," and "medical law." He has also worked as a trainer and consultant for patient rights, reproductive rights, and health law projects carried out by NGOs, the Ministry of Health, local governments, the Istanbul Bar Association, and TÜRAVAK. In 2005, he was honored with the "Lawyer of the Year Service Plaque" by HAYAD.
Gürkan Sert has also served as a project manager for initiatives supported by the Marmara University Scientific Research Project Commission and UNFPA. He is a member of the Marmara University Animal Experiment Ethics Committee and the Faculty of Medicine Clinical Research Ethics Committee, as well as the Vice President of the Health Law and Education Association.
Between October 2018 and October 2019, he was a Visiting Scholar at the John Dossetor Health Ethics Centre, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, University of Alberta, Canada. Additionally, he teaches in master’s and doctoral programs at Health Sciences University and Medipol University, and in undergraduate programs at Demiroğlu Bilim University and Özyeğin University.
